Springett grew up in England, and moved to Canada in his late teens - where he was employed as a gardener, hospital porter and drove a forklift, while pursuing his interests in guitar and music.[1]

In 1992, Springett was awarded a 1992 Prix Aurora Award for Artistic Achievement, and two years later was nominated a Governor General's Award for his illustration of the book Who.
