Life and career

Hynes was born and raised in Eugene, Oregon, and has a bachelor's degree in history from Columbia University.

He has written and directed the 1999 film The Big Split, in which he also starred alongside Judy Greer. This film premiered at AFI's Los Angeles International Film Festival. In 1999, he also starred as a young George Lucas in the independent film George Lucas in Love. Prior to this, he wrote the script for Stealing Stanford, which served as the inspiration for the film Stealing Harvard, although many changes were made to the script that were contrary to Hynes's wishes.[1]

His first film, Al as in Al was written and filmed while Hynes was a student at the USC graduate film school, which he attended on the Paramount Pictures Fellowship. Al as in Al premiered at HBO's U.S. Comedy Arts Festival, and was chosen by USC as one of the best student films in the USC graduate film school's 75-year history [1]

He was one among a group of "story by" credits for the 2019 Pixar animated film Toy Story 4.[2]
