Similar in format to the same artist's Annunciation (Prado), the work shows Mary and Joseph's marriage in front of a Gothic arch. In the left background is shown the Miracle of the Flowering Rod by which Joseph was chosen to marry Mary. On top of this building are scenes from the Hebrew Bible thought to be types of New Testament stories, such as Abraham's sacrifice of Isaac. On the reverse of the painting is a grisaille painting of Saint James and Saint Clare.
