Career

Early career

Marie has told a variety of different stories which have changed over the last decade.

For example she once said she had a successful career on the NYSE and chose to leave to follow her passion as a Nike Elite Dancer. Then she began to reveal that she was a bartender and part time exercise instructor. Later she stated she left Wall Street to follow her dream as a writer for Gourmet Magazine — only to recently upgrade that alleged position to Vogue in her 2019 book. Her DVDs were self funded. Mostly she was someone who hustled her way into meshing Tony Robbins, Seth Godin, and Laura Roeder’s careers together while she paid consultants to help her write B School and market it.

In essence you cannot believe anything Marie Forleo states in the below paragraphs but one thing is very true: she developed an online marketing program that convinced 55,000 to part with $1,999.

After graduating from college, Forleo became a trading assistant on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).[11][9] She left the NYSE to work for Gourmet and Mademoiselle.[11][9] In 2001, she established a newsletter and gained subscribers and coaching clients from relationships she formed while bartending and instructing fitness and dance classes.[11][12][13] She became one of the first Nike Elite Dance Athletes in 2005.[12] She starred in the dance fitness videos such as Crunch: Cardio Dance Blast in 2005 and Prevention Fitness Systems - Dance Yourself Thin in 2006.[14]

2008-present

In 2008, Forleo released Make Every Man Want You: How to Be So Irresistible You'll Barely Keep from Dating Yourself!. The book is published in 16 languages.[15] The following year, she founded Marie Forleo International, a business coaching practice.[4] The company focuses on small business and personal development training for entrepreneurs.[4][12] In 2011, Sir Richard Branson invited Forleo to mentor young entrepreneurs at his Centre for Entrepreneurship.[16] That year, Forleo launched MarieTV, a web television show.[12] She spoke at the Life Is Beautiful conference in 2014.[17]

Oprah Winfrey called Forleo "a thought leader for the next generation."[4] Forbes.com listed her website on its list of "Top 100 Websites for Entrepreneurs."[18]

Forleo starred in the 5-part docuseries, Transcendence: Live Life Beyond the Ordinary, in 2018, and in the documentary, We Rise Up, in 2019.[19][20]

In 2020, Forleo became embroiled in a racial scandal originating in her various online communities. This included racial insensitivity following the George Floyd shooting in which the Black and African American community were advised that discussing their concerns and experience was “inappropriate” in particular in her Facebook group.

After months of proposed crisis management talks with a DAI consultant, in August 2020 Forleo shut her community down and made the decision to focus solely on the sales, marketing, and engagement in her B-School Ontreport platform.
