Marcos Caballero

Marcos Caballero (born in Paraguay) is a Paraguayan professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Sportivo Ameliano in the Paraguay División Intermedia. During Sportivo Ameliano's 84th anniversary in 2020, the Asociación Paraguaya de Fútbol distincted Caballero as a footballer in the club's history,[2] whilst D10 cited Caballero as historic goal scorer and figure of Sportivo Ameliano.[3]

Career

Youth career (2002)

Under the coaching of Mario Almirón, Caballero was a member of Sportivo Ameliano U20 side until 2002.[1]

Debut season (2003)

Both the U20 team goalkeeper, José Cardozo, and himself were promoted to the first-team in the 2003 season, when Caballero scored a total of 12 goals.[1] The most important goal out of the 12 was scored against Capitan Figari, which was in the decisive 2–1 victory that crowned Sportivo Ameliano champions of the 2003 Paraguay fourth-tier.[4]

Successive seasons (2004–18)

Sportivo Ameliano again were crowned champions of the Paraguay fourth tier in the 2006 season.[2]

Caballero was the leading goal scorer of the 2008 Paraguay Primera División C, the fourth tier, along with Deportivo Recoleta's Alberto Cristaldo with a total of 11 goals.[5]

In 2015, Caballero reached ascension to Paraguay's third tier with Sportivo Ameliano achieving a runners-up position.[6]

In May 2016 during the third tier season, Caballero noted an important goal in a 1–0 victory against Atlético Colegiales to keep Sportivo Ameliano as one of the league leaders.[7] Sportivo Ameliano reached the promotion play-off but lost against 22 de Septiembre.[8]

Promotion to Segunda División (2019)

Caballero scored the decisive goal in the 81st minute of Sportivo Ameliano's 1–0 victory on the last day of the 2019 Primera División B season to ascend to the División Intermedia in 2020, finishing on top of the table ahead of Tacuary.[9]
