Maia Wilson
Maia Wilson (born 21 September 1997) is a New Zealand netball player. She plays at goal shooter for the Northern Stars in the ANZ Premiership and for the Silver Ferns national side.[1]
Wilson was born in Auckland and went to Mount Albert Grammar School, where she excelled at both netball and basketball, representing New Zealand youth teams in both sports. She won a basketball scholarship to the University of Idaho in 2015, but turned it down when she was offered a netball contract with the Central Pulse in the ANZ Championship for 2016.[2] She had already become the youngest ever player to trial for the Silver Ferns, the New Zealand national team.[3]
In her debut season with the Pulse, Wilson had to take on a much more prominent role than planned after Jodi Brown suffered an injury, and finished the season with the second-highest success rate in the league, making 294 of 318 attempts for a success rate of 92.5 per cent and missing only 24 shots.[4] She was then signed by new side Northern Stars in the replacement ANZ Premiership competition for its inaugural 2017 season.[5] She scored 433 goals from 495 attempts for the Stars in her second season, with a success rate of 87.47%.[6] She has been re-signed by the Northern Stars for the 2018 season.[7]
She was first selected for the Silver Ferns, the New Zealand national team, in 2016, debuting against Jamaica in the Taini Jamison Trophy on 14 September. She was also a member of the national under-21 squad for the 2017 Netball World Youth Cup.[1] She was also selected in the Silver Ferns for the Fast5 Netball World Series in October 2017.[8] She has 7 Test caps for the Silver Ferns to date.[9]
Outside of netball, Wilson is completing a Bachelor of Communication degree at Massey University in Wellington.[10]
