Luay al-Khatteeb

Dr. Luay al-Khatteeb is an Iraqi independent politician who is the current Electricity Minister in the Government of Adil Abdul-Mahdi.[1]

He graduated in 1993 with a degree in business information technology from Kingston University, in London, England[2] and later received a doctorate from Exeter University in political economy.[3] He advised Shell development of the oil major's exploration and production strategy for Iraq between 2004 and 2008. He also worked as Iraq country director for Crescent Petroleum.[2] A non-resident Fellow at Columbia University and a foreign policy fellow at the Brookings Institution, he was a founding director of the Iraq Energy Institute in 2008.[4]

He was approved by the Council of Representatives on 24 October 2018.[1]

One of his first actions was to sack two directors-general of the ministry; he was accused of sectarianism by a Sunni Arab MP, as they were both Sunni Arabs and one of the replacements was a Christian. The minister responded by saying the decision was based "purely on professional criteria".[5]
