Lords of the Middle Sea

Lords of the Middle Sea is a 1978 board wargame published by Chaosium.

Gameplay

Lords of the Middle Sea is a game of North America reborn in 2401 A.D.[1]

Reception

W. G. Armintrout reviewed Lords of the Middle Sea in The Space Gamer No. 21.[1] Armintrout commented that "This is a game which tries too hard. It has no tactical richness, despite the pretty pictures in the rulebook. The role-playing is trivial and gets in the way."[1]

Eric Goldberg reviewed Lords of the Middle Sea in Ares Magazine #1, rating it a 7 out of 9.[2] Goldberg commented that "this game is not a fantasy game with a science fiction background; rather it is a well-balanced presentation of medieval forces doing battle with the aid of supernatural and technological help. While this is a fairly simple strategic game, there is enough of substance to warrant several playings."[2]

Roleplaying Game Revival

In 2020 Chaosium announced that Lords of the Middle Sea is to be revived as a roleplaying game written by John Snead.[3]

gollark: Also, possibly partly due to point 3, many (dynamic) languages actually implement YAML parsing in a way which allows arbitrary code execution by default. I think Python's yaml library does it unsafely by default (EDIT: see here: https://www.arp242.net/yaml-config.html though PyYaml at least appears to be changing this now).
gollark: It's not simple. The standard is extremely complex and there are something like nine ways to do multiline strings.
gollark: You might need to enable WAL mode.
gollark: It can do simultaneous reads fine as far as I know.
gollark: SQLite is surprisingly good for at least small projects which don't need to run multiple writes at once.
