Plot

Will is ready to exact vengeance on the person who murdered his older brother, Shawn. As Will rides the elevator down from his 8th floor apartment at each floor a new person, who is dead, gets on and tells a story about their lives.

Reception and awards

The book received starred reviews from Booklist,[1] Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books,[2] Kirkus,[3] Horn Book[4] and School Library Journal.[5]

It also received numerous other awards and commendations. At the 2018 Youth Media Awards the American Library Association awarded it as a Newbery Honor, Coretta Scott King Honor Book, and Printz Honor Book.[6] The book also won the Walter Dean Myers Award[7] and an Edgar Award Winner for Best Young Adult Fiction.[8]

The book was longlisted for the National Book Award for Young People's Literature[9] The book was also a New York Times bestseller.[9]
