Lincoln Public Schools

Lincoln Public Schools is the second largest public school district in the U.S. state of Nebraska, located in the heart of the Great Plains. Known for its long-standing legacy of educational excellence and tradition of rigorous academic achievement, the school district of over 40,000 students is home to more than 60 schools and programs. [1]

The current superintendent is Dr. Steve Joel, who was hired in 2010. He previously served for ten years as superintendent in Grand Island, and eight years in Beatrice. A native of Long Island, New York, he has degrees from Doane College, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, and Kansas State University.[2]

As of 2010, students of Lincoln Public Schools speak 52 languages; largely due to Lincoln being a destination of many refugees, who have settled there since the U.S. Government declared Lincoln a refugee-friendly city in the 1970s.[3]
