Lighting Matches was very well received by critics (Cat, Kamile and Deborah). NME critic Andrew Trendell said that the album "makes Bedford sound like Hollywood" and that Grennan "knows what he's doing". However, some of the critics were less favourable. Clash Magazine critic Nick Roseblade said that the album "isn't a bad album, but sadly it doesn't excel either" and that "it all feels a little too rehearsed and sanitised in its delivery."

gollark: And if it was significantly above that threshold, it'd be removed from the cycle.
gollark: Basically, it involved using the EATW formula to get how many views an egg should have.
gollark: Well, no, but the antiviewbombing stuff was what made TJ09 complain.
