Lee-on-Solent Line

The Lee-on-Solent Line was a three mile long Lee-on-the-Solent Railway Company built branch railway line that ran between a junction on the Fareham to Gosport Line at Fort Brockhurst to Lee-on-the-Solent via three intermediate halts, Fort Gomer Halt, Browndown Halt and Elmore Halt.[1]

History

Authorised on 14 April 1890, the line opened on 12 May 1894 after a number of construction difficulties and failing safety inspections.[1] The line remained independent, due to the poor performance of the line, until it was taken over by the Southern Railway well after consolidation in 1923.

The passenger service was withdrawn from the intermediate halts on 1 May 1930 before the service to the terminus was removed on 1 January 1931 and goods on 30 September 1935.

The line today

The station building at Lee-on-Solent has been converted into an amusement arcade showing no visible remnants as a railway station. The site of the platform is now a car park. There are no traces of the other three halts and virtually all trace of the railway route has been erased with modern development.
