Ladies' Choice (Hairspray song)

"Ladies' Choice" is a song written for the 2007 film version of Hairspray. It is performed by Link (played by Zac Efron), with music and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.

Production

"Ladies' Choice" was added to replace "The Madison", a dance number carried over into the stage musical from the original non-musical 1988 Hairspray film.

USA Today wrote Efron "lets loose with a lusty yelp during a solo number, Ladies' Choice, which finally showcases his inviting baritone in all its unadulterated glory."[1]

Synopsis

Link performs a song in public, and Tracy Turnblad's dance moves impress him and Corny, who decides to put her on The Corny Collins Show.

Critical reception

BlogCritics wrote "Fans of the Broadway musical (which I never saw) may be disappointed by the new songs "Ladies' Choice" with Zac Efron and "The New Girl in Town" with Brittany Snow. They aren’t nearly as fun as the original Broadway songs".[2] Spirituality and Practice described the song as "Elvis-like",[3] Cinema Review named it 'Elvis-inspired",[4] and Movie Exclusive called it "cheeky".[5] DVD Review described it as a "suggestive number".[6]

gollark: The room is (depending on formulation) either a weirdly structured computer running a program which obviously does understand Chinese, or a similar program expressed as a lookup table.
gollark: I don't really agree with Chinese room arguments.
gollark: Photonic ML hardware is apparently beginning to exist and is very efficient, so that could help in a few years.
gollark: There is apparently work on accursed optics things for the displays, and batteries... are harder, but maybe minimising power use with more efficient hardware can be done.
gollark: Enough minor conveniences stacked together gives a useful product. And you can fit smartphone SoCs into slightly bulky glasses - there are already AR devkits doing this. The main limitation is that the displays aren't very good and it is hard to fit sufficient batteries.
