History

Kristu Jayanti College, founded in 1999, is run by "BODHI NIKETAN TRUST", formed by the members of St. Joseph Province of the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI). The college is affiliated to Bangalore University and is reaccredited with highest grade 'A' by NAAC in Second Cycle of Accreditation. The college is recognized by UGC under the category 2(f) & 12(B). The college was accorded autonomous status in 2013 by the University Grants Commission, Government of Karnataka & the Bangalore University.

Kristu Jayanti College is affiliated to the North Bangalore University. A majority of higher educational institutions are established in the southern and eastern parts of Bangalore. The northern part of Bangalore District was semi-urban and rural that lacked educational and industrial development. The college was started at K. Narayanapura in Kothanur region. The college had a humble beginning with 1 course, 9 students and 3 full-time academic faculty in 1999, has grown exponentially in programmes (41 programmes including Four Ph.D. programme), in number of students (7000) and in full-time faculty strength (227), all in a matter of 20 years.

The CMI congregation

The vision and mission of the institution stem from the inspiration of St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara, the founder of Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI), the first indigenous religious congregation of India for men. The noteworthy role in upholding Indian cultural heritage and efficiency in managing higher education institutions and rendering social development programmes of CMI Congregation is commendable.  CMI congregation manages One Deemed University, 59 colleges, 650 plus schools and other engineering, technical and medical institutions across India. The Educational philosophy of the CMI congregation is centered around holistic formation, social commitment, quality education, value education and co-operation with families.

The legacy of CMI education is embedded in the educational philosophy of the congregation, adhered to by all institutions meticulously. A focus on holistic education, impetus on quality, educational pedagogy based on values, social commitment and co-operation of families are the significant aims of the CMI educational philosophy. These foundations have built the edifice of CMI Educational legacy globally.

Autonomous status

Kristu Jayanti has become an autonomous college from the academic year 2013–14. It continues to be an affiliated college of the Bangalore University and is autonomous in the sense that it is free to frame its own courses of studies and to adopt innovative methods of teaching and evaluation. The University confers the degrees to the students after passing the examinations held by the college.

Academics

The college had a humble beginning with 1 course, 9 students and 3 faculty members has exponentially grown with 7000+ students and offers 25 UG programmes, 14 PG programmes and 3 PG Diplomas. The college has four recognized research centres in the field of Social Work, Bio-Technology, Commerce and Psychology.

Literary and Cultural Association provide  training programmes for Skit, Mime, one-act play, Guitar and Vocal. During the previous year more than 80 corporate organizations visited our campus to recruit prospective employees from various streams of study at Post Graduate and Graduate Levels. Kristu Jayanti College has formal relationships with foreign Universities like the Appalachian State University, United States, Normandie Business School France, FHDW University, Germany and Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences (HNU), Germany to promote teaching, research and exchange programme. The institute is actively involved in many international collaborations for advancement of education at KJC Bangalore. .[2]

International Student Forum (ISF)

The campus is melting pot of students across the globe. Kristu Jayanti College has already entered into collaboration with universities from US, Germany and France to have collaboration with academic and non academic programmes. Moreover, students from Republic of Korea, Ivory Coast, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Tibet, Bhutan, Chad, Thailand, Congo, Nigerian, Cameroon, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen seek shelter under the shades of rich and versatile grooming of the college. Kristu Jayanti College has a special International Students Forum to facilitate the travel and immigration needs of the international students. We have regular inflow of exchange student from our partner universities abroad.

Research

The Research Promotion Cell with two wings under Social Work and Biotechnology motivates aspirants towards the acquisition of a doctoral degree. With several ongoing projects, the research promotion cell is dedicated to erudite leadership and aims to advance the knowledge in the respective fields through scientific discovery, collaborative work and national & global outreach. The research programmes are affiliated to Bangalore University.

Faculty

Faculty improvement is facilitated through programmes like in–house Faculty Development Programme (FDP), department level programmes and Participation in FDPs / Conferences/ Seminars at other institutions and colleges. The institution encourages the faculty members to participate and undertake institutional research and to pursue personal research leading to M.Phil. and Ph.D.

Campus

Kristu Jayanti College is an Autonomous College, under Bangalore University, one of the largest in the country. The college is located at K.Narayanapura, Bangalore, 11 km away from Vidhana Soudha, the heart of Bangalore City.

Various departments and administrative sections are housed in the Main Block. The MBA and MCA programmes function in a separate block. The college provides class rooms, libraries, auditoria, laboratories, conference halls, panel rooms, music room, gymnasium and sports facilities.

The library also has digital resources including a collection of CDs, databases, e-journals, software and projects. There are separate rooms for group discussion, reading and cubicles for personal study. Moreover, an e-library has been set up for e-resource. The Computer lab is equipped with internet and is open beyond office hours to meet students’ computing needs. The campus is equipped with wi-fi facility. The department of Life Sciences features four laboratories for Genetics, Biochemistry, Biotechnology and Microbiology.

Student life

The college has formed several academic clubs and associations like Environment Club, Commerce Club, Management Association, Tourism Club, Computer Academy, Psychology Club, Erudite Club, Journalism Club, Life Science Club, Jayantian Life Science Forum, etc.

The Center for Social Activities (CSA) was established in 2009 as a students’ social movement.

Jayantian services

The Entrepreneurship Development Cell organizes various Entrepreneurship Awareness Camps, Entrepreneurship Development Programmes and Skill Development Programmes in the institution. The cell collaborates with various external agencies and facilitates interaction with entrepreneurs. EDC serves as a mentor for upcoming Jayantian entrepreneurs. EDC has initiated several training programmes in collaboration with the Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India, Ahmedabad. Several diploma and certificate programmes like Open Learning Programme, Diploma in Entrepreneurship Development, HP sponsored Graduate Entre-preneurship Training in Information Technology and also a Certificate Course in Entrepreneurship Development Programme are offered by the EDC. The cell is also collaborating with National Entrepreneurship Network (NEN).

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a body for social work affiliated to Bangalore University.

The college has an NCC Army wing under 3KAR Bn. Students enroll for a period of 3 years. NCC activities such as parades, camps, outing for map reading, trekking, weapon training, drills, adventure camps, social service, environmental protection, awareness programmes, etc., are organized on a regular basis.

Holistic Development

The impetus on holistic development has made Kristu Jayanti the choice for many from Karnataka and other states who aspire for higher education. The college has evolved a well-structured teaching – learning process at individual programme level to ensure global competency with a thrust for excellence. Annual strategic plan, academic calendar, course plan, etc. serve as guideposts of effective execution. Participatory learning activities are implemented in all the departments making the pedagogy student-centric and constructivist. Experiential learning at the institutional level is ensured through industrial visits, field trips, internships, projects and educational tours.  Interactions with eminent personalities of international and national repute through Vichaarmanthan, Vinimay, Conferences, Industry Institute Interface (3i), Tech Talks, etc., inspire youth to aim for the stars. Innovative pedagogy integrating ICT enkindles creativity of the students. The quality of teaching and the effect on student performance is monitored through a structured mechanism.
