Krishnananda Dutta Chaudhury

Krishnananda Dutta [1] , born as Krishnananda Dutta Chowdhury (Bengali: কৃষ্ণানন্দ দত্ত চৌধুরী, Odiya: କ୍ରିଷ୍ଣାନନ୍ଦ ଦତ୍ତ ଚୌଧୁରୀ and कृष्णानंद दत्ता चौधुरी in Devanagari), Phonetic transcription: Krishnananda Dutta Chowdhury, also known as Krishnananda Dutta[2] (c. 1490-1570) born into an affluent Bengali Kshatriya family in Andul of the present-day Howrah district of West Bengal, India and was the erstwhile revenue collector there. He was a devotee of Krishna from a very early age. He followed the precepts of a true Vaishnava, affectionate and enduring to one and all. He regularly organised kirtans at his kirtanana-mandapa located near by his home.

कदाचिन्मन्डपे तस्य नित्यानन्द महामतिः।

अवधूतः समायातो वैष्णवैः परिबारितः॥

कृष्णादन्दस्त्त तान् भक्त्या पुजयामास पुण्यवान्।

ज्ञात्वा प्रभुं परं तत्त्वं बलदेव-स्वरूपकम्॥

प्रभुस्तं कृपया प्रादात् कृष्णनामानि तानि वै।

प्रसिद्धानि कलौ याने तारक-ब्रह्म-संज्ञया॥

सम्पन्निं न्यस्य कन्दर्पे सोहगच्छत् पुरुशोत्तमम्।

तत्रैव कारयामास "चान्दुलमठ" मुत्तमम्॥

मौनभाबे वसंस्तत्र तीर्थ-सन्न्यासमाश्रितः।

वर्षाणि जापयामास त्रिलक्ष-नाम-सङ्ख्या॥

In 1514 Krishnananda was initiated to krsna-nama-mantra by Nityananda Prabhu in Andul. A few years later Krishnananda took sanyas and went to Puri, caring his celebrated deities— Radha Madhava and Jagannatha Deva[4]. With the request of the king of Aul he further moved to Chhoti village[5] located at Kendrapara district in Odisha.
