Kojo Asamoa-Caesar

Kojo Asamoa-Caesar is a Ghanaian-American politician based in Oklahoma and a member of the Democratic Party (United States). The law school graduate who is a kindergarten teacher in Oklahoma was nominated to represent Oklahoma's 1st Congressional District of Tulsa after elections on June 30, 2020.[2] Educator and community leader Asamoa-Caesar, having won the primaries for his district, [3] is on the ballot in the general election on November 3, 2020, in the United States.[4]

Career

Originally born in Alexandria, Virginia, he earned a B.S. from Old Dominion University in May 2008 and a J.D. from William & Mary Law School in May 2012. He professionally worked as an early childhood teacher at Tulsa Lighthouse Charter School, as director of outreach and operations at the office of Senator Mike Johnson (Oklahoma politician), as founding principal of the Greenwood Leadership Academy [5] among other roles. He is a graduate lawyer. "I got my values from Ghana. My formative years were in Ghana. And they have played a significant role in my rise. I don’t run away from my Ghanaian heritage..." says Asamoa-Caesar who won 63.6% of votes cast at the June 2020 United States House of Representatives elections in Oklahoma became the US Democratic Party’s candidate for Oklahoma's 1st congressional district[6] as a newcomer. He will face Kevin Hern of the Republican Party in the November 2020 United States House of Representatives elections.

Personal life

Asamoa-Caesar was born in Alexandria, Virginia to immigrant parents from Ghana and was raised primarily by his mother until she suffered a serious stroke at age 40 that resulted in her return to Ghana so her family could help care for her, leaving a 14yr-old Kojo behind [7]. Kojo is historically Oklahoma's first black Democratic nominee of the century,[8] he is married to Onikah Asamoa-Caesar [9] and they have a daughter named Hadassah Eden who was born April 2020.
