On 3 June 2006, he joined Bangladesh Nationalist Party through a ceremony where he presented Prime Minister Khaleda Zia a bouquet.[1][2] According to article 70 of the Constitution of Bangladesh, Faridpur-1 fell vacant and by-elections were called. Bangladesh Nationalist Party originally nominated Kazi Sirajul Islam for the by-election but changed the nomination to Shah Muhammad Abu Zafar before the election.[3] Islam has since returned to Bangladesh Awami League and he is the Vice-President of Bangladesh Krishok League in Faridpur District.[4]
