The village used to be named Keysun (Armenian: Քեսուն, romanized: Kʿesun; Kaysum in Arabic and Kaisou in Greek). In the early 9th century it was the base of the rebel leader Nasr ibn Shabath al-Uqayli. Today the village contains the 12th-century Crusader Fortress of Kaysun.
