Karu Esselle

Karu P. Esselle is the Distinguished Professor of Electromagnetic and Antenna Engineering at University of Technology Sydney, Australia. He is also a Visiting Professor of Electronic Engineering at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia. He was named a Fellow of the Royal Society of New South Wales in 2020. He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) [1] and a Fellow of Engineers Australia. In 2019 The Australian Special Report on Research, Professor Esselle was named the National Research Field Leader in the field of Microelectronics and Electronic Packaging in Engineering as well as the National Research Leader in the field of Electromagnetism (in Physics & Mathematics Disciplines).

He was the leader of the design team that designed the high-gain antenna system on board the world's first entirely Ka-band CubeSat spacecraft - Audacy Zero. The space craft was made by Audacy, USA, and launched to space in December 2018 by SpaceX (USA) Falcon 9 rocket. This is believed to be the first Australian-designed high-gain antenna system launched to space since CSIRO-designed antenna systems on board Australia's own FedSat satellite launched in 2002.

Professor Esselle has globally chaired the prestigious Distinguished Lecturer Program of IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (the premier international learned society dedicated to this field with close to 10,000 members worldwide, administered from the USA) since 2018. Nationally he was the Chair of IEEE New South Wales (Australia) from 2016 to 2017 and Vice Chair of the same from 2014 to 2015.

Professor Esselle has published over 600 scientific articles, which has received nearly 10,000 citations. In July 2020, his Google Scholar h-index is 48 and i10-index is 174.

His recent awards include 2019 Motohisa Kanda Award for the most cited paper (in the previous five years) in IEEE Transactions on Electromagnetic Compatibility in the past five years, 2019 Macquarie University Research Excellence Award for Innovative Technologies, 2019 Australian Research Council Discovery International Award, 2017 Excellence in Research Award from the Faculty of Science and Engineering, 2017 Engineering Excellence Award for Best Innovation, 2017 Highly Commended Research Excellence Award from Macquarie University, 2017 Certificate of Recognition from IEEE Region 10, and 2016 Engineering Excellence Awards for Best Published Paper from IESL NSW Chapter.

Previously he has been awarded BSc degree in Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering with First Class Honours from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, and MASc and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Ottawa, Canada.
