Postcard of the main library

The library system consists of five branches.

  • Main Library
  • Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Library at Wyandotte County Lake Park - It opened on June 26, 2001.[4]
  • South Branch Library in Argentine,[5] with 21,000 square feet (2,000 m2) of space. It opened in 2012. The name was chosen to reflect that it serves the entire southern region of the city and not a single neighborhood.[6]
  • Turner Community Library
  • West Wyandotte Library

History

It formerly operated the Argentine Carnegie Library which opened in 1911 in a storefront and received its own Carnegie building in 1917.[7] By 1998 it, on the National Register of Historic Places, was the sole remaining Carnegie library in the city.[8] In 2012 the current South Branch opened at a cost of $6 million, one third of which was acquired by the fundraisers of local residents. The school district agreed to pay for the rest if residents raised $1.5 million to $2 million. A church was demolished to make way for the current library, and the school district took possession of the former library.[6]

gollark: It seems to have a decent amount of attention because Google.
gollark: Or possibly just because of massive hype about it rather than actually being very good for what it's used for.
gollark: Yes, but it appears somewhat useful for the same tasks of building simple utilities, and they're rather similar in their... bad error handling, bad typing, and reasonably fast compilation.
gollark: I mean, Go is a decent C replacement, sure.
gollark: Some stuff is less imperfect, i.e. better.
