Kanak Kanti Barua

Kanak Kanti Barua is a Bangladeshi neurosurgeon and academic. He is serving as 10th Vice Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University(BSMMU).[1][2][3]

Early life and education

Barua was born in 1953.[4] He passed MBBS from Dhaka Medical College in 1977.[2] He obtained FCPS from Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1990. He achieved MS in Neurosurgery in 2003 and completed his Ph.D in 2004 from Kobe University.[5][6]

Career

Barua joined the then IPGMR (Now Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University) in 1985.[4] He served as Chairman of Neurosurgery and also as Dean of Faculty of Surgery at this University.[4] He was appointed as 10th Vice Chancellor of BSMMU in March 2018.[7] He also served as president of Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons from 2017 to 2019.[7]

Publications

Barua published more than 47 papers in different national and international reputed journals.[5][6][8]

Affiliations with professional organisations

Barua served as President of Bangladesh Society of Neurosurgeons (BSNS) and was also the Founder Secretary General of the society. He was the President of SAARC Society of Neurosurgeons.[4] He was also the secretary, Asian Congress of Neurological Surgeons in 2000–2002.[5]

Awards and recognition

Barua was awarded with fellowship of International College of Surgeons from USA in 1993. He was awarded with honorary FSLCS from Sri Lanka College of Surgeons, Sri Lanka and honorary FCPS from College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan in 2012.[5][6] He received Professr PS Ramani lifetime achievement award in 2019.[9] He was awarded by BMA North American Chapter at New Orleans on 26 July 2018 for Outstanding Performance and service in the field of Neurosurgery.[4][10][11]
