Juno Birch

Juno Birch is a British drag queen and sculptor. She is known for her unique aesthetic, best described by herself as "An alien that crash landed on earth in 1957, and since then, has been foolishly trying to disguise itself as a human female, but ending up just looking like a camp, kitschy, muppet with wonky eyebrows."[3] Her aesthetic features primarily pastel alien skin (typically blue or pink), yellow hair, and retro sunglasses. She creates sculptures that depict an exaggerated version of her drag character, often featuring details like Adam's apples, overdrawn lips, big hair, exposed breasts, 5'oclock shadows, and square jawlines to blur the lines between masculine and feminine attributes.[4] She is also known for her YouTube channel where she plays The Sims and does makeup tutorials.[5]

Career

Birch began performing in drag professionally in December 2018.[6] She has been described as "the Sherri Ann Cabot of drag", as well as being influenced by The Smurfs, Mommie Dearest, The Muppets, The Stepford Wives, Jennifer Coolidge, John Waters, Tim Burton, The Sims, Death Becomes Her, and Mars Attacks!.[7][6][2] Of her sculptures, she says "When I’m making a sculpture, I want to be that character and create a story and then act it out on stage. I’ll create a sculpture, then I’ll have a character in mind and then I’ll be listening to really camp shit which will help me come up with an idea, a performance. I would love to do a one-woman show where I basically play all different characters that I’ve sculpted, because they’ve all got very different personalities."[6]

Personal life

Birch is a transgender woman and in 2015 had a surgery that alleviated her gender dysphoria.[8] She first came out at the age of 13 or 14 and started hormone replacement therapy at age 16.[6] Juno Birch is her legal name. Her transness is heavily reflected in her art.
