Joseph Schatzkés

Dr. Joseph Schatzkés (26 August 1898 in Dvinsk, Russia – 28 April 1984),[1] of France, was a philatelist who performed in-depth studies of French and Mexican postage stamps and postal history, and wrote extensively on the subject.

Collecting interests

Schatzkés specialized in the postage stamps of France and Mexico. However, he also collected and studied postage stamps and postal history of South American countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru and Uruguay. He owned the only known surviving copy of the Buenos Aires 1859 1p "In Ps" tete-beche pair.[2]

Philatelic activity

Dr. Schatzkés paid special attention to postal cancellations as part of postal history, especially those cancels of France and Mexico. He published “The Cancellations of Mexico, 1856–1874” in 1964, for which he was awarded with the Crawford Medal. Dr. Schatzkés was active at the Académie de philatélie, the Club Philatélique in Paris serving as its president. At the postal museum in Paris, he was a member of the board of trustees.

Honors and awards

Because of his efforts in accomplishing significant philatelic studies Dr. Schatzkés received recognition internationally. He signed the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists in 1963, was awarded the Crawford Medal in 1964, the Lichtenstein Medal in 1974, and the Lindenberg Medal in 1983. He was elected to the American Philatelic Society Hall of Fame in 1985.
