Joseph Hinton

Joseph Hinton is the individual after whom the community of Hintonburg, Ontario, now part of Ottawa, is named.

Born in County Wexford, Ireland, he was a shopkeeper and civic official in Richmond, Ontario. Hinton came to live with his son Robert in present-day Hintonburg sometime after 1867. He died in 1884 but his contribution to the community – which included securing a post office and the Nepean township hall – was recognized in the naming of the village of Hintonburg, now part of Ottawa, Ontario.
