John A. Rice (politician)

John A. Rice was a member of the Wisconsin State Senate.

Biography

Rice was born on March 17, 1832 in Ticonderoga, New York.[1] In 1851, he graduated from Western Reserve Medical College and moved to Merton, Wisconsin.[2] Rice married Caroline Caswell in 1852. They had four children before her death in 1864.

Career

Rice was first elected to the Senate from the 10th District in 1869. In 1871, he was a candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Wisconsin, losing to Milton Pettit. Additionally, Rice was School Superintendent and Chairman of the Town Board of Merton. He was a Democrat.
