Jardine Scholarship

The Jardine Scholarship is a full scholarship, primarily for undergraduates, offered by Jardine Matheson for study at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge.[2] It was established in 1982 to commemorate Jardines' 150th anniversary[3] and was founded with the objective of "develop[ing] future leaders, who would give back to the societies in which [Jardine Matheson] operate[s]".[4]

Selection and selectivity

The scholarship is available for study in only four colleges in the University of Oxford and four in the University of Cambridge, with some exceptions. These are Exeter College, Oxford,[5] Oriel College, Oxford,[6] The Queen's College, Oxford,[7] Trinity College, Oxford,[8] Trinity College, Cambridge,[9] Magdalene College, Cambridge,[10] Peterhouse, Cambridge[11] and Downing College, Cambridge.[1][12]

It is limited also to the countries in which Jardine Matheson has a significant presence; these include Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, and Taiwan.[1]

Application process

The application process involves both interviews and tests. There are typically two rounds of interviews and two essays, the latter on the applicant's career aspirations and on a separately assigned topic.[13] The final interview is with the Scholarship Committee, typically a panel of eight or more experts.[14] Former chairmen of the Scholarship Committee include Duncan Robinson,[15] Sir Ivor Roberts[16] and Geoffrey Grimmett.[17]

Selection criteria

The Jardine Foundation specifies four standards against which applicants are to be judged:[1]

  • "personal qualities and character with particular regard to the extent to which the applicant has demonstrated exceptional qualities of leadership and fellowship";[1]
  • "achievements in non-curricular activities, including sports";[1]
  • "community involvement and activities";[1] and
  • "other attributes which, in the opinion of the Scholarship Committee, indicate that the applicant is likely to become an outstanding citizen with a high commitment to the performance of public duties and/or community involvement."[1]

Terms of the Scholarship

The scholarship covers full tuition fees, college fees, an annual stipend, and return airfare from the students' country of origin.[1] The scholarship has been valued at $200,000.[18] Upon acceptance, scholars are bound by a set of regulations, decided by the Scholarship Committee.[19]

In addition to the financial coverage of the scholarship, Jardines also maintains the network of scholars and offers them summer internships within the conglomerate.[20] It also hosts regular gatherings with alumni and senior management.[1]

Jardines' postgraduate scholarships are offered in partnership with the Cambridge Commonwealth, European & International Trust,[21] a merger by two charities founded by the University of Cambridge,[22] and Gadjah Mada University.[23]

gollark: I *am* inevitable.
gollark: Unless they're really cool robot overlords.
gollark: No.
gollark: Historically technological advances have at least eventually replaced lost jobs (not that I think jobs created/lost is a good way to judge innovations) but I suppose you could argue that AI is different somehow. It definitely would be if AI stuff started being able to make more AI stuff, but you would probably run into bigger issues than high unemployment then.
gollark: It also seems unlikely that we would suddenly jump from the current situation where a bit of stuff is automated and quite a lot isn't to everyone being immediately unemployed, so you can notice and do stuff about it in the interval. Restructure the economy for post-material-scarcity or whatever. No idea how that would *work* but oh well.
