Jörg Monar

Bernd Jörgen Monar (born July 22, 1960 in Bonn) is a German political and social scientist. He teaches, among other things, at the College of Europe, which he headed as Rector from 2013 to 2020.[1]

After Abitur in Stuttgart, Monar studied at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität in Münster, the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich, as well as in Paris at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris and the University of Paris IV. Monar then obtained his doctorate in 1989 at the Ludwig Maximilians University Munich in modern history. He obtained a second doctorate in 1991 in the field of political and social sciences at the European University Institute in Florence.[2] In the same year, Monar was appointed assistant professor at the College of Europe in Bruges. From 1995 to 2001 Monar was a professor at the University of Leicester. This was followed by a teaching position at the University of Sussex. After 17 years of teaching at the College of Europe, Monar was elected to the board of directors of the university in 2008. In March 2013, the university's board of directors appointed him to succeed Paul Demaret as rector. He took up the post in September 2013.

Monar is the author of several books and publisher of various specialist journals, such as the European Foreign Affairs Review. He is also a member of various academic organizations, including the European Integration Working Group. He also works in an advisory capacity for European and national institutions. For example, he advised the British House of Lords from 1999 to 2006.
