The app features guided meditations, music and talks posted by contributing experts.[2] The app made Time magazine's list of 50 best apps for 2016.[3] In 2019 it had over seven million users - in 2018 it was cited by The New York Times as "the most popular free meditation app."[2] It was originally developed by Brad Fullmer[4][5] and purchased by Australian brothers Christopher[6] and Nicholas Plowman[7] in April 2015.[8]

The application features the most extensive free library of guided meditations with over 27,000 titles provided by the experts such as neuroscientists, psychologists, mindfulness teachers, as well as lecturers from Stanford University, Harvard University, and the University of Oxford.[9][10]
Insight Timer adopts a freemium model, with a free basic version offering limited functionality and a paid version that provides access to in-depth courses and additional services.[11][12]
As of 2019, Insight Timer had over 9.5 million meditators and 4,771 professional meditation instructors and musicians.[9]
As part of community building activity, Insight Timer features a social platform with lively discussion groups and local meetings run by its users.[12]
