Ilona Lucassen

Ilona Lucassen (24 May 1997 – 12 June 2020) was a Dutch judoka who represented the Netherlands in international competitions.[1]

Career

Lucassen, a native of Geldrop,[2] was a part of the Dutch national selection, based at Papendal, since 2016. During the 2016 European Junior Championship in Málaga, Lucassen tore her cruciate ligaments. After a one-year of rehabilitation, she returned to competitive judo in 2017.[3] Her best result was in at the 2018 Judo Grand Prix The Hague. At the time she was 78th at the world ranking list and beat Marhinde Verkerk who was fifth at this world ranking list, to win the bronze medal. In the same year she was part of the team who won the silver medal at the 2018 European Championships for mixed teams in Yekaterinburg, Russia.[4] In 2018 and 2019, she won three times a Continental Open competition. In 2018 in Minsk, Belarus and Glasgow, United Kingdom and in 2019 in Tallinn, Estonia.[1]

Death

Lucassen died on 12 June 2020 at the age of 23.[4][5] She died by suicide.[6]
