Iain De Caestecker

Iain De Caestecker (/də ˈkæskər/ də KAST-kər;[1] born 29 December 1987),[2][3] is a Scottish actor. He is known for his roles in the films Shell (2012), In Fear (2013), Not Another Happy Ending (2013), Lost River (2014), and Overlord (2018). From 2013 to 2020, he portrayed Leo Fitz in the television series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Early life

De Caestecker was born in Glasgow, Scotland. He has a twin sister and is one of four children; his parents are both medical doctors.[4] His mother, Dr. Linda De Caestecker, is Director of Public Health (DPH) for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, the largest health board in Scotland. She worked as an obstetrician and gynecologist, in different parts of the United Kingdom and in West Africa.[5] She is an honorary professor at the University of Glasgow.[6]

Iain De Caestecker went to Hillhead Primary School[7] and completed an HND in Acting and Performance at Langside College.[8]

De Caestecker began his acting career at the age of nine, when someone came into one of his acting classes and cast him in BBC short film Billy and Zorba (1999).[9]

In 2000, he had a minor role as a bully in the comedy horror film The Little Vampire, before appearing in the television show Lip Service. That same year he first appeared on the cobbles as Adam Barlow in Coronation Street, UK's longest-running and most-watched TV soap opera. He would appear in more than 50 episodes (2001-2003) before the role was recast with an older actor.

He played the lead in the BBC series The Fades and Young James Herriot; the latter earned him a nomination for a BAFTA Scotland for Best Actor/Actress – Television.[10]

The psychological horror film In Fear premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. That same year, De Caestecker appeared in Filth and Not Another Happy Ending; the latter earned him his second BAFTA Scotland nomination, this time in the Best Actor/Actress – Film category. He also appeared in the music video for Gabrielle Aplin's song "Please Don't Say You Love Me".

In 2013, on his first visit to Los Angeles, De Caestecker landed a series regular role on the television series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,[11] and remained until the series' seventh and final season in 2020 where he was a guest star.[12] That same year, he had the lead role in Ryan Gosling's feature directorial debut Lost River.[13] The film premiered in competition in the Un certain regard section at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival,[14] and was released in the U.S. on 10 April 2015.

In 2016, his Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. character was animated for an episode of Disney XD's Marvel's Ultimate Spider-Man Vs. The Sinister 6, to which the actor lent his voice.[15]

In 2018, De Caestecker co-starred in the J.J. Abrams-produced war/horror film Overlord, which premiered at Fantastic Fest 2018. The plot follows American soldiers stuck behind enemy lines before D-Day who discover secret Nazi experiments. The movie received two nominations at the 2019 Saturn Awards.[16]

In 2020 De Caestecker will star as young Douglas Petersen in BBC One's four-part miniseries Us, based on David Nicholls' novel by the same name.[17] In late 2019, he was cast in the BBC One political-thriller series Roadkill.[18] Fresh from wrapping up work on Roadkill in January 2020, De Caestecker was cast in horror short Upstairs.[19]
