Hiroute Guebre Sellassie

Hiroute Guebre Sellassie, a native from Ethiopia, is the United Nations Secretary-General's Special Envoy for the Sahel and Head of Office. Prior to her appointment of 1 May 2014 by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Ms. Guebre Sellassie served as the Director of the Political Affairs Division and Head of the Goma Regional Office in the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) from 2007 to 2014. Ms. Guebre Sellassie succeeds Romano Prodi of Italy, who completed his assignment on 31 January 2014. [1] [2]

Biographical Information

Sellassie has had a distinguished career and has held positions both within and outside the United Nations. From 1998 to 2004, she held the position of Chief Executive Officer of the African Women Committee on Peace and Development, established jointly by the Economic Commission for Africa and the African Union to serve as an advisory organ on women's involvement in peace and security issues. She has also held positions in the Ethiopian Government and has practiced law for many years. She was the Oxfam Regional Peace Building and Conflict Management Advisor for Horn, East and Central Africa.

Education

Sellassie was educated at the University of the Sorbonne in Paris.

Family and personal life

Ms. Guebre Sellassie is married and has three children.
