Hermann Kaufmann

Early life

Hermann Kaufmann was born Vorarlberg in Austria. He studied architecture at TU Innsbruck and TU Vienna .

He lectured in timber construction at the Liechtensteinische Ingenieurschule – the Engineering College of Liechtenstein (1995/96). He has held the position of visiting professor at TU Graz (1998) and the University of Ljubljana (2000).

Work

After studying, Kauffmann established his architecture practice Hermann Kaufmann ZT with Christian Lenz in Schwarzach.

[1]Since 2002, Prof. Kaufmann has been Director of the Chair of Timber Construction at the at the Institute for Architectural Design and Building Technology of TUM’s Faculty of Architecture. This Chair’s teaching focuses on design using timber, with the emphasis on eco-friendly processes and the creation of a healthy environment. The key topic of interest is how wood, as a biogenous material, can help to optimize the use of resources in construction and create a healthy living environment without compromising architectural quality. Prof. Kaufmann is a member of several associations, including the Austrian Federal Chamber of Engineers and the Central Association of Austrian Architects.

Awards

On 24 September 2007, Kaufmann was awarded the first Global Award for Sustainable Architecture.[3] In 2010 Kaufmann received the Spirit of Wood Architecture Award, which is awarded in Finland.
