Henry H. Shires

Henry Herbert Shires (June 7, 1886April 29, 1961) was a suffragan bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of California from 1950 to 1958. He was consecrated on September 29, 1950. Born in Bernardsville, New Jersey, he studied at Cornell University and the General Theological Seminary. He was ordained deacon in 1911 and priest in 1912. After serving parishes in New Jersey, Arizona, and California, he became dean of the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in 1935. He was suffragan bishop of California from 1950 to 1958. He retired in 1958 and died on April 29, 1961. In 1911, he married Mabel Clare Millis. Their son, Henry Millis Shires, became an Episcopal priest and was professor of New Testament at the Episcopal Theological Seminary in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
