Heinrich Sievers

Heinrich Sievers (20 August 1908 – 17 September 1999) was a German musicologist, music critic, University lecturer[1] and conductor.[2] He was regarded as the Nestor of the history of music in Hanover as well as of the State Niedersachsen.[3] and wrote music-historical monographs also in English and Finnish publications.[4]

Life

Sievers was born at the time of the German Empire in the small town of Dorum at the North Sea, but spent his youth in the towns Goslar and Peine.[1] After finishing school, he studied musicology at the time of the Weimar Republic, initially in Würzburg at the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg.[5] There he became a member of the Akademisch-Musikalische Verbindung zu Würzburg[6]

In 1931, during his studies Sievers discovered[5] in the archive of the Wienhausen Abbey the Wienhäuser Liederbuch from the year 1460,[1] which he published two decades later as facsimile.[5]

From 1932, Sievers continued his studies in Cologne at the local University, where in 1935[5] with his musicological research Die lateinischen liturgischen Osterspiele der Stiftskirche St. Blasien zu Braunschweig ... he won his Dr. phil..[7]

From 1937 Sievers worked in Braunschweig as a music critic[5] and started in Hanover in the year of the beginning of the Second World War (1939) at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover.[8]

Parallel to his activities at the State Music School, Sievers was able to work in the post-war period in Germany and still under the British Occupation Zone from 1946 on at the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Library - Lower Saxony State Library. (TH).[8] In addition he taught at the {{Ill|Kirchenmusikschule Hannover|de}.[5]

In 1954 Sievers succeeded the chemist and university lecturer Walter Scheele as conductor of the collegium musicum, the symphony orchestra of the later Leibniz Universität Hannover.[2]

In 1959 Sievers was appointed professor of musicology at the Hanover University of Music and Drama, where he was also responsible for the department of church music. In the same year he was appointed honorary professor at the TH Hannover. In addition, he again worked as a critic in magazines or daily newspapers such as the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung.[5] From 1960 until 1968 he was music director of the Sondershäuser Verband Akademisch-Musikalische Verbindungen.[9]

Sievers researched the history of music, especially that of Hannover and Niedersachsen, almost throughout his life. His numerous essays, reviews, books and appearances in radio broadcasts were reflected in several publications. Among his most important are Die Musik in Hannover (1961), Musica curiosa[10] (1970, 2nd edition 1971), Kammermusik in Hannover of 1980 and the keyword Hannover in the 1st edition of the encyclopedia Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart. His two volumes of the Hannoversche Musikgeschichte (1979 and 1984)[5] are among the standard works.[1]

Sievers died in Garatshausen (Upper Bavaria) in 1999 at the age of 91.
