The first HICSS conference, which took place in 1968 at the University of Hawaii, attracted representatives from 11 countries. Since that time, HICSS has grown markedly. It now draws over 1,000 scholars and professionals in academia, industry and government agencies from around the world [1] and many hold senior editorial positions in leading research journals in the field such as MISQ, MISQE, JMIS, JAIS, CACM, DSS, GDNSS, EJIS, and DATA Base. There are over 20 journal publications that provide fast track opportunities to selected high-quality HICSS papers in recent years.[2]

From 1968 to 1989, HICSS proceedings were published by Western Periodicals Company, California, a then rather popular publishing house for technical conferences. As the conference grew in importance, HICSS worked with the IEEE Computer Society for its proceedings. In the 1990’s, a significant number of HICSS papers were related to technical fields such as electrical engineering, computer science, and telecommunications. As the field evolves more and more towards computer application and information systems, the majority of HICSS authors today come from a broader spectrum of disciplines with an increasing focus on interdisciplinary work.

To celebrate the unprecedented success of HICSS as the longest conference in its field, HICSS joined the global trend inspired by MIT’s DSpace project. Starting with HICSS-50, all HICSS publications have been archived and disseminated at no cost to all readers worldwide through ScholarSpace. They have also been made available in the digital library of the Association of Information Systems (AIS).

Papers selected for presentation appear in the HICSS Proceedings have grown to add over 6,000 additional pages of refereed materials annually[3] with over a million downloads from the last four proceedings.[4] According to Microsoft Academic, HICSS is ranked the 37th among over 4,000 conferences being tracked over years in terms of citations.[5]
