Hard Times in New York Town
"Hard Times in New York Town" is a folk rock song written and recorded by Bob Dylan in 1961, but was not released until 1991 as part of The Bootleg Series Volumes 1–3 (Rare & Unreleased) 1961–1991. A second rendition was released on The Bootleg Series Vol. 9: The Witmark Demos: 1962–1964 (2010). Dylan spent his early life in rural Minnesota, and the song reflects his newfound experience living in New York, with the song repeating the line "From the country, living down in New York town." The song references several landmarks of New York, such as the Empire State Building, and the turbulent lifestyle that living in the city demands. The song takes the melody and opening of "Down on Penny's Farm", an earlier song about rural poverty, and alters it to make it about contemporary, urban poverty.[1]
