Hadrien de Montferrand

Hadrien de Montferrand (French: [adʁjɛ̃ d(ə) mɔ̃fɛʁɑ̃]; born 1976) is a French specialist in Chinese contemporary art. As the French Ambassador of Drawings, he has long served as a bridge between the art worlds of China and Europe. His more than seven years at various auction houses and art institutions included roles as marketing director for Artcurial, the largest French auction house, and for the UCCA Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing. He has headed the development of the gallery in Beijing since 2009.

Biography

After graduating in Art History at La Sorbonne in parallel of his business studies, he worked for two years in China for Unilever.

In 2002, he came back in France where he has been appointed Head of the Marketing department of the largest French auction house Artcurial. After five years in Paris, he was sent in mission in China to create an auction house in Shanghai, a project that has been aborted.[1]

In 2008, he became development manager of the Ullens Center of Contemporary Art, founded in 2007 by Guy Ullens and his wife.

In 2009, he opened the first HdM GALLERY in China dedicated to Works on Paper, in partnership with Laurent Dassault. The gallery lays the emphasis on drawings for two reasons:[2] first of all, to give the opportunity for Chinese Artists to show their technical skills and thus legitimate their works. Then for the purity and accessibility of drawings.

In 2018, he opened his third space in London, located in the heart of Mayfair’ s celebrated art district.

He works closely with leading Chinese Artist such as Liu Xiaodong, Wang Du,[3] Sui Jianguo or Mao Yan[4] and with noted Western artists such as Martial Raysse. Other Western artists that he represents include Barthélémy Toguo, Manuel Mathieu, and Elias Crespin.[5]

Art Forums

In 2009, he has been invited to deliver a speech during the International Forum on Chinese Antiques & Artworks Auction in Beijing as a specialist of Contemporary Chinese Art.[6]

In 2010, Hadrien de Montferrand was a jury member of the Foire Internationale du Dessin won by Kristina Heckova. The prize consisted in a one-month exhibition in the gallery.[7]

He is an active member and Art advisor of the China Cultural Heritage Foundation.
