Grupo de Acción Rápida

The Grupo de Acción Rápida (GAR) is an elite unit of the Spanish Civil Guard specialized in counter-terrorism.[1]

Tracing its origins to the Unidad Antiterrorista Rural (UAR) founded around 1978, the GAR was properly created in 1980.[2] It is based in Logroño.[3] Initially aimed to counter ETA, since 1998 it has re-oriented towards international deployments, taking part in missions in Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Haiti and the Central African Republic.[3]
