Car on the roof of Grimsby Secondary School

Grimsby Secondary School made headlines[2][3][4][5] when a group of 6 students from the class of 2016 placed a 2001 Jaguar S-Type on the roof of the school.

Relay for Life

GSS has hosted five Relay for Life events for the Canadian Cancer Society in the past ten years.[6] In 2011, GSS hosted its most successful fundraiser, accumulated over $90,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society.[6] The secondary school hosts the student-organized event every two years.[6] The itinerary includes many fun activities for the community including head shaving and face painting. The next Relay for Life event at GSS is expected to occur in 2017.[6]

Planned closure

On March 28, 2017, the District School Board of Niagara voted in favour of a motion to close three high schools, including Grimsby Secondary School, in favour of a single large high school to be constructed at a yet-to-be-determined location.[7] Under the current plan, Grimsby Secondary School will close in 2020 following the 2019–2020 school year, and the new amalgamated high school will open in September 2020.

Opposition to planned closure

Many groups have been vocal in opposing the planned closure of Grimsby Secondary School. The Town of Grimsby, as well as the Town of Lincoln, have both passed motions voicing opposition.[7][8][9] Niagara West-Glanbrook Member of Provincial Parliament Sam Oosterhoff, himself a recent high school graduate, has also voiced opposition to the amalgamation plans, and has spoken in the Ontario Legislative Assembly in favour of a moratorium on school closures.[7][10] On Wednesday, March 29, students at South Lincoln High School walked out of class in protest over the closure and amalgamation plans (which affect South Lincoln High School as well as Grimsby Secondary School and Beamsville District Secondary School).[11]

gollark: As a new mRNA strand is generated by the action of the RNA polymerase II machinery on a stretch of DNA, it gets a “cap” attached to the end that’s coming out from the DNA (the “5-prime” end), a special nucleotide (7-methylguanosine) that’s used just for that purpose. But don’t get the idea that the new mRNA strand is just waving in the nucleoplasmic breeze – at all points, the developing mRNA is associated with a whole mound of specialized RNA-binding proteins that keep it from balling up on itself like a long strand of packing tape, which is what it would certainly end up doing otherwise.
