Godswill Obioma

Godswill Obioma (born 12 December 1953), is a Nigerian professor and the current registrar of National Examination Council, NECO.[1]

Early life and education

Obioma is from Amaokpu, Nkpa, Bende Local Government Area, Abia State. After his primary and secondary education, he preceded to Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education to study mathematics and physics, graduating in 1975 with distinction and as the overall best graduating student. He went to University of Nigeria, Nsukka to study mathematics and education, graduating in 1979 as the best graduating student. He followed it up with a master's degree in educational measurement and evaluation in the same university, graduating in 1982. He went further for his doctorate degree, graduating in the same field and same university in 1985 and winning the vice chancellor's award for the best doctoral dissertation.[2][3]

Career

Obioma started his career in 1979 at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka as a research fellow, after he was retained at the end of his degree programme in the same institution. In 1988, he left the university and moved to the University of Jos, where he became the head of the research division of the institute of education as a senior research fellow.

At the age of 38 in 1991, he was appointed a professor of mathematics education and evaluation at the University of Jos. In 1993, he became the head of department, department of science, mathematics and technology education. From January 1994 to March 1994, he served as the special assistant on policy monitoring and evaluation to the then military administrator of Abia State.

From 1994 to 2000, he served as the director, monitoring and evaluation, National Primary Education Commission, Kaduna. In 2000, he became the director, monitoring and evaluation, Universal Basic Education Programme, Abuja. From 2003 to 2005, he served as the director, monitoring, research and statistics, National Business and Technical Examination Board (NABTEB), Benin City.

In March 2005, he served as a special assistant to the then minister of education, before serving two terms as the executive secretary, Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, Sheda, Abuja. Later in his career, he joined Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC and became the Resident Electoral Commissioner of Ebonyi State.[2]

Registrar of NECO

On 22 May 2020, Obioma was appointed by the president of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari as the registrar of National Examination Council, NECO for a five years tenure to replace Abubakar Gana. According to his appointment letter, his tenure started from 14 May 2020.[4]
