The name of the group comes from the musicians' names: Gil (Lionel Gilles Loueke), fe (Ferenc), ma (Massimo). They met at Berklee College of Music, coming from different backgrounds: Loueke from West Africa, Nemeth from Hungary, and Biolcati, an Italian born in Sweden.[1] The same members form the Lionel Loueke Trio, the difference being that the Lionel Loueke Trio plays original music written by Loueke while Gilfema offers compositions by all three musicians.
After 20 years of playing together, the band is coming out with a fresh new recording in April 2020 under the collaborative moniker Gilfema again.

gollark: Why do people think "well, 9127409124 other bots may already have a music feature, but MINE will be special and people will use it".
gollark: Not THAT many compared to stuff like music.
gollark: Oh, my bot has a "telephone" system using webhooks.
gollark: SPUDNET is used in a lot of places where people want to not bother with that much and just shove secured communications between some endpoints.
gollark: I did have a thing with ingame modems and some ECC library on older versions, which ensured that you couldn't fake a message from the remote debugging (not backdoor) computer.
