History

George C. Reifel bought the sanctuary land in 1927 and originally used it as a working farm and family retreat.[1] Reifel's son, George H. Reifel first leased the land to the British Columbia Waterfowl Society for use as a sanctuary in the 1960s. In 1972, the Reifel family "agreed to a combination of land sale and donation to the federal government on the condition that it would continue to be managed for the primary benefit of waterfowl and that the Sanctuary would continue to bear the name of George C. Reifel."[1]

The Alaksen National Wildlife Area, which was also part of the Reifel family land, was designated at an NWA in 1972 and is managed by the Canadian Wildlife Service.[1][2]

gollark: Also don't be unlucky. Or in the wrong place. Or at the wrong time.
gollark: > but they dont hold u to a moral obligationI have no idea what you mean, but in a post-apocalyptic situation you'll quite probably just die horribly.
gollark: No, you'll immediately get warlords or something who will impose rules and it would be very bad.
gollark: > They would disown their kid if the kid took a vaccineI'm not sure what you would expect to do about this. I feel like forcing them to be vaccinated wouldn't really help matters.> Plus there is the indoctrination that the parents doWell, you would try and inform children about this, as you would for basically anything else.
gollark: Hence "allowed to choose themselves".
