GenderFail

GenderFail is a publishing and programming initiative created by Be Oakley[1] that seeks to encourage projects from an intersectional, queer perspective.[2] Many projects are tied together by the slogan “Radical Softness as a Boundless Form of Resistance.”[3][4] The press is currently based out of Brooklyn, NY.[5]

Exhibitions and events

GenderFail has been a part of exhibitions, programs and events at A.I.R. Gallery[6], MoMA PS1 (Long Island City)[7], The International Center of Photography (NYC)[8], Wendy's Subway (Brooklyn)[9], Sediment Arts (Richmond)[10][11], Vox Populi (Philadelphia), EFA Project Space (NYC), The Contemporary Artists' Books Conference at Book Culture (Long Island City)[12], Washington Center for the Arts (Washington DC), Ulises Books (Philadelphia), Anderson Gallery (Richmond), and After School Special (Milwaukee).[13][12][14]

Publishing projects

GenderFail's publications "uses appropriation as a strategy to “pervert” the canon, contaminate it, but also to give visibility to under-represented and othered forms of being."[15]

In October 2018, GenderFail released An Anthology of Failure, which includes essays by Manuel Arturo Abreu, American Artist, Sasha Costanza-Chock, Demian Dinéyazhi', Johanna Hedva, Nicole Killian, Andrea Liu, Be Oakley, Nate Pyper, Sable Elyse Smith, Alok Vaid-Menon and Agustine Zegers. Printed Matter has dedicated a shelf in their bookshop to displaying Genderfail titles.[16] Some of GenderFail's projects take on a digital form, such as Remember Their Name, a page memorializing every trans person who was murdered since 2016.[17]

In 2019 they published Consciousness by artist Lex Brown.[18] Their book GenderFail Reader 1, was named one of OutTv 19 best reads of 2019.[19]

gollark: ... and?
gollark: I don't think anyone sells those.
gollark: I suppose technically that last point is more about DNS server provider than registrar, but these days they mostly come bundledish.
gollark: Anyway, I'd like opinionions:- *what* domain should I get?- what registrars are good? I want to be able to use automatic DNS validation for certs, as well as dynamic and quick IP updates, and also have reasonable prices.
gollark: Hmm, how about `nuke-this.website`?
