Berger umpired 1 National League game on August 24, 1886 as the home plate umpire.[2] The game featured the Philadelphia Phillies and the Detroit Wolverines, and saw the Phillies defeat Detroit 10–2. The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle described Berger as exhibiting "great ignorance of the game" and "his decisions were equally severe on both teams".[3]
