Military career and death
He joined in the Royal Air Force during World War II, and served in the European air campaign. On 20 June 1943, Pilot Officer Tomlins and 5 others took off from RAF St Eval in an Armstrong Whitworth Whitley to conduct a daytime anti-submarine sweep. During the operation, the Whitley was shot down by flak from a German U-boat, killing all 6 on board, including Tomlins.[1][2]
