Freddie Tomlins

Frederick William Edwin Tomlins (5 August 1919 - 20 June 1943) was a British figure skater. He was the 1939 World silver medalist and European silver medalist. He competed at the 1936 Winter Olympics and placed 10th.

Military career and death

He joined in the Royal Air Force during World War II, and served in the European air campaign. On 20 June 1943, Pilot Officer Tomlins and 5 others took off from RAF St Eval in an Armstrong Whitworth Whitley to conduct a daytime anti-submarine sweep. During the operation, the Whitley was shot down by flak from a German U-boat, killing all 6 on board, including Tomlins.[1][2]
