Fran is a Spanish, Italian, Croatian, Slovene and Albanian unisex name (respectively Francisca/Francisco, Francesca/Francesco and Fran(j)o), and a common short form (hypocorism) of the English names Frances and Francis. The Spanish and Italian Fran is more common for men, while the English name is mostly used for women. The Croatian, Slovenian and Albanian Fran is used only for men.

gollark: 1984 is actually part of the English GCSE course at my school (and/or exam board or whatever, not sure how that works). It's amazing how picking apart random bits of phrasing or whatever for hours on end ruin your enjoyment of a work.
