Flaxmere

Flaxmere (Māori: Paharakeke) is a township in the Hastings District and outlying suburb of Hastings City, in the Hawke's Bay Region of New Zealand's North Island. It consists of a series of cul-de-sacs, radiating from a main street.[1]

Flaxmere

Flaxmere has a population of 9,408 according to the 2013 Census. Areas within Flaxmere include Flaxmere East, Kingsley-Chatham, Lochain and Woolwich, according to the census units of Statistics NZ.[2]

Flaxmere was built to cater to the housing demand of Hastings. Flaxmere was intended to be an upper-middle class subdivision but because land was subdivided into smaller lots it turned into a low income neighbourhood. Flaxmere has one of the highest social deprivation index values of the Napier-Hastings metropolitan area, being exceeded only by the suburbs of Camberley and Maraenui.[3]

It has a small shopping centre with a supermarket, petrol station, post office, bakery, video store, butchery, indoor rock climbing centre, and various other businesses offering necessities and/or leisure. Other amenities include a library, police station, several churches and an indoor swimming complex, Flaxmere Waterworld.

Education

Flaxmere has four primary schools:

  • Flaxmere Primary School is co-educational state primary school,[4][5] with a roll of 429 as of March 2020.[6][7]
  • Peterhead School is a co-educational state primary school,[8] with a roll of 516 as of March 2020.[6][9]

gollark: As you can see, my grasp of perl is excellent enough that I can merely LOOK at a small bit of mildly obfuscated code and guess what it does.
gollark: Close* enough**.
gollark: Is this a primality test thing?
gollark: Ah. `tee` is actually a syscall. Fun.
gollark: Huh, `tee` is a function somewhere?
