Fauzia Yasmin

Fauzia Yasmin (born 1942) is a Bangladeshi singer.

Early life and education

Yasmin's father, Lutfar Rahman, belonged to former provincial civil service of British India and her mother Begum Mouluda Khatun was also a vocal artiste taking music lessons from musician Ustaad Kader Baksh. She is the second among five sisters. Her three other sisters Farida Yasmin, Nilufar Yasmin, and Sabina Yasmin are also vocal artists in Bangladesh. She earned her master's in Bengali literature from the University of Dhaka and worked in the teaching profession at T&T College, Dhaka from 1971 until her retirement in 1999.

Musical career

Yasmin took music lessons from the musicians Ustaad Yousuf Khan Qureshi, and Ustaad Mohammad Fazlul Huq. She became a vocal artiste of the then Radio Pakistan in 1960. She took part in National Television programs since 1965. She used to perform modern Bangla songs, Nazrul Sangeet, folk and rhyme songs along with Urdu Geet and Ghazals. She was also a playback singer and rendered voice in a number of films. She participated in musical conferences and soirees.[1]

Her popular songs include Aj Putuler Gaye Holud, Mon To Noy Aar Ayna, Ami Nupur Pora Jhorna Dhara and many more.

She, along with her husband Mobarak Hossain Khan, initiated a television musical program on NTV, Bajo Ebong Bajao in 2008, which featured a method of Sangat (co-performance) of Raag based Nazrul Sangeet with Sitar, Sarod, and other classical instruments.[2]

Award and recognition

Yasmin won Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy[3] (National Academy of Fine and Performing Arts of Bangladesh) annual Gunijon Shambardhana in 2006, and Alakta Literary Council Award (1987).[4]

Personal life

Fauzia Yasmin is married to Mobarak Hossain Khan, a musicologist, musician and a writer, who retired from the government service as the Director General of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. Together they have one daughter, Reenat Fauzia[5] and two sons Tareef Hayat Khan,[6] and Tanim Hayat Khan.
