Far-right social centres
Far-right social centres are community spaces inspired by neo-fascist and Third Position ideas. The most famous is the Italian movement CasaPound.
Italy
The first centres were founded in Italy in the 1980s.[1] In 1990 members of Fronte della Gioventù of the Italian Social Movement squatted in a building in Rome and founded a social centre called Il Bartolo.[2][3] In 1998, Italian activists squatted in another building in Rome and created a social centre called PortAperta.[4][5][6] They organized concerts there.[7]
In 2002 neo-fascists squatted in a building and created social centre called CasaMontag.[8] On 20 September 2002 Italian nationalists squatted in a building in Rome and created the Foro 753 social centre.[9][10][11]
CasaPound
On 26 December 2003 Italian neo-fascists squatted in a building on Via Napoleone III in Esquiline Hill and founded the CasaPound social centre.[12] In June 2008 CasaPound constituted an "association of social promotion" and assumed the name CasaPound Italy. Currently the movement has many social centres in Italy. Some of them are Circolo Futurista Casalbertone in Rome[13] and Casa d'Italia in Colleverde, and CasaPound Latina in Latina (Lazio region).[14][15] Social centre Area 19 was squatted in 2008[16] and was evicted in 2015.[17]
Spain
Spain has far-right social centres in Madrid and Zaragoza. Hogar Social Zaragoza is a building squatted in June 2014. Hogar Social Ramiro Ledesma (Ramiro Ledesma Social Home) is a movement founded in 2014 in Madrid.[18][19] Members of HSM squatted in various buildings[20][21] and organized demonstrations with thousands participants.[22]
Ukraine
In 2014, during the Revolution of Dignity Ukrainian nationalists occupied a building in Kiev city centre. The building was used as the headquarters of Azov Battalion.[23] In 2016 members of Civil Corps Azov founded the social centre, Cossack House (Ukrainian: Козацький Дім) in the building,[24] inspired by Italian CasaPound.[25] In the building a library of the literary club "Flame" (Ukrainian: Літературний клуб "Пломінь"), sports club,[26] a recording studio and a tattoo saloon.[27]
France
Bastion Social was a French neo-fascist political movement that used political actions such as squatting, demonstrations and humanitarian aid. The movement was founded in 2017 by members of the student association GUD, who squatted in a building in Lyon.[28][29][30] Later the movement spread to other French cities.[31] It was banned as a far-right organization in 2019 by the French Government.[32]
