On 6 August 2016, Blue released her debut solo release "No Pain", along with a music video which premiered on YouTube two weeks later.[1][2] Speaking about the track, the Norwegian-American told Atwood Magazine that the track is "all about surviving, the immeasurable pain of sexual violence, and the detriment caused by our society’s silence towards victims of abuse." Describing the feeling of performing it live, Blue stated that she was "[emotionally] in a state of anger and hurt. As I sang into the microphone in front of me, I was both determined and very afraid to break my own silence." This refers to Blue herself being a survivor of sexual assault.[1] The proceeds of the song and Blue's Another Angry Woman merchandise were donated to RACES (Rape Advocacy Counseling and Education Services), and the music video for the song featured victims of rape and sexual assault, in a fashion that presented the song as a protest song.[3]
Her debut album, Another Angry Woman, was released in November 2016. It received generally positive acclaim upon release for its poignance and social criticism. Speaking to NPR Illinois about the non-profit album, the singer-songwriter described this start to her solo music career: "I wanted to not only touch on my own experiences with sexual violence, but also how I find empowerment in being a woman".[4]
Blue additionally released two albums and one extended play with Tara Terra,[5] as well as a 2015 EP in electropop duo BOYCUT alongside Justin Peters.[4][6]
